Along with the advance of the society, more and more technologies and innovations are put forward by scientists and other people, thus we attach much importance to protectingthese immaterial things by resorting to intellectual property rights. Although these things are intangible, they are as crucial as the tangible assets we possess. Recently there appear a lot of cases which violate the intellectual property rights and affect the interests of people concerned. How should we deal with this problem?

To begin with, measures should be taken to arouse public awareness so that the majority may acquire a comprehensive understanding of this special property. Next, individuals and organizations who enjoy the property must equip themselves with adequate knowledge of related laws and regulations. Once violated, it’s of great importance for them to refer to the useful tools. Last but not least, it’s the governments responsibility to perfect the system of safe guarding.

As I see it, intellectual property represents the progress of society, so we should exert ourselves to protect it. And the issue of being violated will be solved ultimately if the above measures can be put into practice.

The value of intellectual property has become a rising issue within China, as it seeks to further integrate itself into the world economy. The effects of producing illegal, copyrighted goods are still being studied. One effect is that artists may no longer produce top quality products if they know that many will only copy their work. This can be seen with the lawsuits against illegal downloading in the United States. These lawsuits and the threat of lawsuits by the music and movie industries are being made to keep people from breaking the law.

With the level of international communication and transportation that exists today, copyright problems have become global. Yet, in the future, the relationship between industries and government will be more organized, and this may deter many copiers from breaking the rules. The effect on the industries that are being copied has also been substantial. Several industries have chosen to view this problem as a wake-up call. They are starting to rethink the emphasis placed only on profits.

Many companies are beginning to offer more customer-driven prices and choices. For example, in some foreign countries, you can purchase songs on the Internet instead of buying a music CD. The prices of software and other materials are beginning to lower. China, as it joins the World Trade Organization (WTO), will no doubt begin to enact more penalties against copyright infringers as was seen in the United States. This will strengthen Chinese brands as they become more global.

Recent studies have shown that a growing number of college students in China plagiarize. And some universities have hence adopted compulsory course on intellectual integrity. Some people believe that in this way students will treat the issue seriously, while others are negative and regard it as formalistic. As far as I am concerned, the intellectual integrity course will to some extent help change the situation.

On the one hand, intellectual integrity course emphasizes the education of academic morality and helps students to develop a good academic attitude. The phenomenon of plagiarizing in college is the consequence of competitive psychology. In the modern society, as the pace of life has quickened, the worship of money influences the college students. They are inclined to become so impulsive and impatient that they even don’t want to think. They are worried about the failure and hope to be better than others. But in fact they are not as capable as required. So they want to win by unscrupulous means. And then plagiarism occurs. In the final analysis it is the question of intellectual integrity. The aim of the course is to cultivate students to be honest. It will help students realize the importance of honesty and it is really a great shame to plagiarize.

On the other hand, although it can help, the intellectual integrity course is not all that is needed to prevent plagiarizing. Education in ideology can help students be aware of the wrongness of plagiarism is wrong, but the colleges still need to establish clear operational norms and regulations to put an end to that sort of thing. Some universities have related norms mainly including publishing the plagiarist’s name, registering in his personal file and even canceling his degree. Strict requirement, management, surveillance, rewards and punishment will be pursued. Then plagiarism will be prevented effectively. For the above reasons and a lot more not mentioned here, we can reach the conclusion that the intellectual integrity course can help prevent plagiarism in college. And the clear operational norms and regulations also should be established. The universities and colleges should put the education in ideology in priority, and the academic institutions should encourage not only the achievements in scientific research, but also the virtue of honesty. Only in this way can plagiarism be prevented thoroughly.

In China, many people do not know the meaning of the four simple words intellectual property . Not only those inexperienced children, but also some knowledgeable adults who do not understand the meaning of the four words intellectual property . Now, let me tell you a story about a foreign student studying in China. After five years, he returned to his own country and bought many books in China before leaving.

After returning, the foreign student said to his classmate in the dormitory, "These books are all your favorite. Take them, look at each other, and give them to you! Alas, these books are cheap in China. I bought a large basket of them for only a few tens of dollars, but many Chinese people say that it seems to be some kind of backboard (pirate). By the way, what is backboard?" He went to ask his teacher. When the teacher woke up, he replied vaguely, "Are you talking about backboard? It seems that Chinese people call it backboard."

The international student did not answer the teachers question and silently walked back to the student dormitory. After returning to the dormitory, Li Humor, a classmate who had studied with him for 3 years, always followed the international student and asked him what he had talked about with the teacher. Li Humor made the international student anxious, and the student asked him, "What is the relationship between books and blackboards?" Li Humor replied, "No relationship!" This was an incident that happened in a foreign country.

This story reflects how much foreigners attach to the protection of their own intellectual property rights and never dare to make or imitate what others have already made; Compared to them, how has our China done? Here, I would like to say to all the students in our school who copy homework: "Copying homework is equivalent to stealing someone elses intellectual property. Perhaps you also hate those who produce pirated DVDs and books, but do you know that copying homework, like their behavior, is equally shameful and will be despised and abandoned by teachers and classmates.

I hope you can get rid of the bad habit of copying homework and strive to be a likable good student!

Intellectual property is an issue that deserves peoples attention. Some people nowadays, without the consent of the author of their work, invention, discovery, or other things, and without paying the fees that the author should pay, make pirated copies without the consent of the court and sell them at a cheap price. Perhaps some people may think this way, even though pirated products are not as good as genuine ones. However, genuine DVDs and works are very expensive, and some cannot afford them due to financial constraints. Pirated ones are better than genuine ones. Actually, this understanding is incorrect.

I have an example here. When I was a child, I once went with my mother to buy my favorite DVD. Originally, we planned to go to the big store to buy some discs. But when we went to the store, there were many DVDs available, but they were all expensive. The movie I wanted, "Tom and Jerry," was very expensive, costing a few hundred yuan. My mother said its too expensive. If she buys this set of discs, she cant go buy anything else. So, I had to leave the store dejectedly. When I got home, my mother saw that some small shops also had this set of discs, and they were very cheap, only 40 yuan. But when I went in, these discs looked okay, but they seemed like pirated copies. I told my mother not to buy it anymore, and she said, The ones in the store are a bit expensive, but we also have this kind of disc here, and its very cheap. Lets buy it. I had to agree, but I had one condition: to buy one and take a look first. My mother readily agreed.

After returning home, I happily turned on the TV. Just as it was about to play halfway, the TV would freeze or encounter common situations. After watching this example, I understand a truth: even if pirated products are good, they can only be the black sheep among the genuine ones. I also understand why legitimate authors are drinking Northwest Wind. Its because legitimate products are too expensive, and ordinary people have no choice but to buy pirated copies. I think the sales of genuine products should have less profit margin and lower the price first. This is the only way to make people respect and value your intellectual property, and make it affordable for ordinary people to buy. In this way, more people will buy, and naturally more people will sell well. Only by doing so can the author of the work no longer worry about their intellectual property rights.
